LEGENDARY TATTOO ARTIST ‘BOWERY’ STAN

Tattoo artist Tony Polito gives Bowery Stan one more Tat.
Photographed by Hassan Kinley

I once read that you weren’t a New Yorker until you were able to look at a building
and say, “I remember when that was…” As a New Yorker, I understand that all but too
well. Constant evolution means little if New York stays the same. The Disneyfication
of Times Square, while great for tourists, crushed the hearts of true New Yorkers.
For me, the best way to learn about NY is through the stories told by
the New Yorkers who made this place what it is today.

Bowery Stan Maskowitz aka ‘Bowery’ Stan is one of these great story tellers. Coming from
a family of tattoo artists, with 60 years himself as an artist, to listen to him speak is to hear
tales of a New York long forgotten by many. As the final legally operated Tattoo shop on the
Bowery, this man has seen more of New York than most New Yorkers can imagine.

Tales that are filled with characters whose names range from Brooklyn Blackie, Tattoo
Lou Rubino, Crazy Eddie Funk and my personal favorite, Crazy Joe Gallo (Umberto’s
Clam house is known more for the mob hit on Crazy Joe, than for their clams) one can sit
for days and listen as he tells stories that cover a New York City that no longer exists.
But his deepest and most passionate tales are all connected to one thing…his art.
Tattooing.

AMERICA NU MAGAZINE ISSUE #1

Check out the second magazine out of Dash Publications, AMERICA NU magazine. As Creative Director, I wanted to push my refined aesthetic even further to come up with something that feels classic! Between the two magazines (this and Karin + Raoul), working with Art Director David Barnett, Editor-In-Chief Raquel Horn (America Nu) and Editor-In-Chief Hassan Kinley (Karin + Raoul) was indispensable to my development as an artist. In the past 6 months my eyes have been opened to totally new art forms, aesthetics, and mediums (I plan on tackling sculpture) and I’m excited for what’s to come next. Thank you Dame, McKenzie, Raquel, Hassan, and Cynthia for allowing me to work alongside you to create these pieces of work. Check out America Nu!  -Ronin/SS

BTW, The Black Apple is featured in this issue of America Nu, don’t miss out on that story.
