THE ART OF SILENCE

I would have given anything to find myself at Marina Abramovic‘s party at Sundance in honor of the documentary “Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present.” She asked that all guests wear white lab coats and noise canceling headphones while not speaking for an hour. Pretty wild isn’t it?
Abramovic is known for making waves in bold and unexpected ways. I was one of the thousands who stood in line at the MOMA this past spring, hoping for a chance to sit across from her. Abramovic gave her full attention to each person and stared at them for as long as they wished in complete silence. It was a magnificent sight and it left me with a deeper understanding of what it is to be fully seen by another human…you know without all of those other distractions we all seem to be so fond of.
Reading about her party online, I understand that Abramovic left some attendees quite unsettled while others very appreciative of having a chance to connect with another in an unusual yet so simple way. I found myself thinking about Abramovic last week as I joined a group of headphone wearing music lovers for a night out on the town. Behold….The Amazing Silent Disco - a roaming dance party where everyone was listening to the same DJ music.
We took to the streets, the subways and the bars, all the while dancing and grinning ear to ear. We got many stares everywhere we went as most people had no idea what was going on. All they could see is us dancing to….nothing? It was a fun way to share a special moment alone yet together. I wonder if Abramovic would approve.

ETTA JAMES

I first heard an Etta James song about six years ago. I had just moved into an apartment share in Chelsea and I remember marveling at the album cover of that undeniably tenacious girl with platinum hair and feline eyes. It was a cold yet sunny February afternoon and her voice filled the apartment with such emotion, pain and power that it left me breathless.
Over the years, her songs have been my accomplices in times of great happiness and sorrow – always reminding me to stay authentic and strong. Today, hundreds of family, friends and fans gather in Los Angeles to remember and celebrate her. She was a gift to us all and her legacy will stay strong.

Last week, we had our launch party at one of the event rooms at STK – a venue so sexy that it made my wearing 4” stilettos in the rain totally worth it. After having many a deliciously crafted cocktail as I socialized with the KARIN+RAOUL guests, I managed to sneak away to the main dining room and join my friends for dinner.
I was pleased to find out that the cuisine and service themselves matched the sexy but not stuffy decor. Our party of six ordered lavishly and our waitress, a striking redhead, was friendly and attentive. Prices for main courses start at $22 and go up to $79, and each side dish is $11, so this restaurant is not for the faint at heart….or wallet. We bit the bullet and ordered large; each dish proved to be more delicious than the first and I have to say it was completely worth it. A week later, I cannot help but reminisce about the steak with a topping of fois grass and the mac & cheese.
